Accommodation in Barkly West - Barkly West was the site of the first major diamond rush, in 1870, on the South African Diamond Fields, and was initially known as Klip Drift. The district's current economy is dependent on stock and irrigation farming, although lone diggers still pan a 150 km stretch of the Vaal River close to the town.
